And the winner is….
But first, their methodology. The judges sampled cappuccinos and regular black coffees from all three chains served in a overcup to hide their names. Criterias for judging were taste, consistency, presentation and process.
Contrary to what majority might think, Dunkin’ Donuts serves better black coffee than both cafes! For a better and cheaper cappuccino go head to McCafe. If you want to spend money on bad coffee, go to $tarbucks.
Just goes to show that $tarbucks ain’t what it’s cracked up to be and can be beaten by the anyone. It’s just sad that whenever someone here in the Philippines puts up a coffee shop, they always try to imitate $tarbucks, hopefully this will discourage them and force them to come up with a more original idea.
So, the next time you have that sudden craving for good coffee, you know where to go.

Have you heard the news? Starbucks is now rebranding some of their stores and renaming it 15th Avenue Coffee and Tea. They’re now imitating the indie coffeeshops in US.
You are indeed worthy of the name kapetan!
I just wish WE imitated the indie coffee shops in the US and not Starbucks. Sadly, the Philippines is years behind other countries when it comes to coffee. Do you know of any innovative coffee shops here?
Haha…Im no coffee expert ginamit ko lang yung name kasi maganda pakingan
Sa ngayon don’t know any innovative coffee shops here. Sa tingin ko yung number one reason why we are years behind when it comes to coffee is yung barista mismo. Majority ng barista natin medyo konti lang yung alam nila sa kape. Marunong naman maglatte art pero hindi marunong mag-cup o uminom ng coffee. Siguro halos lahat hindi nag kape (frapp o blended lang ini-inom). So pano natin mamaintain yung quality. Hindi gaya ng barista sa US o sa ibang bansa, yung barista nila very passionate and knowledgeable when it comes to coffee. Kung nakita mo yung WBC o USBC yung barista mismo yung pumili sa coffee nila para gamitin sa competition. Tapos inexplain nila kung bakit yun ang ginamit nila na coffee.
Like you hindi ako expert sa coffee and hindi pa masyado nadedevelop yung palate ko pero I try to improve my skills by reading from barista blogs and try to develop my palate by drinking coffee from coffeeshops.
you could learn without spending, be a barista,,pwede namang part time.. at least you’re on floor, learning and getting paid pa..;-) top coffee shops do coffee cupping during training.
Indeed, what better way to learn the trade than to be one. That’s how I learned. But the training should never stop, majority of coffee shops stop training their staff as soon as they start their actual job, sa simula lang and then wala na. There should always be monthly if not weekly quality checks and training refreshers so that the baristas are always following the standards.
It’s nice to know people in the coffee industry, this is a good way to learn best practices and what to avoid.
Hope to hear from you again grace! Your comments are greatly valued.
The two aside from Starbucks…their coffee are locally roasted and suited with a touch of Pinoy, of course, American taste as well, and the coffee sources are quality controlled constantly…
Well, Davao has a diverse indie coffee shops and cafes…
i wanted to be a barista…when starbucks frist opened in Manila, i wanted to try out…but i was dismayed that they only hire college grads.! What the hell??!!
magtitimpla k ng kape..hindi mo kailangan ng diploma…you need passion for what you do…
ayaw mo man isipin na nagiging social climber ang maraming mga pilipino….pag pumunta kayo sa US….makikita nyo ang mga barista mga HS students…
it’s amazing how coffee can start a political conversation..heheh..peace!
Hi Jing
I was fortunate enough to have been spared of discrimination when I applied as a barista (never been to college). I was surprised though when the job started that most of the people working there college grads from very reputable schools, honestly nanliit ako. Sinuwerte lang siguro ako sa interview.
“magtitimpla k ng kape..hindi mo kailangan ng diploma…you need passion for what you do…” I COULDN’T AGREE WITH YOU MORE!
